Predictive Policing TechnologyPosted: May 28, 2012
As this piece in Scientific American notes, the prediction of crime for policing is become a more sophisticated science thanks to data-rich computer technology. The Memphis system, developed by IBM, is called Blue CRUSH, has resulted in a 30 percent reduction in serious crime since its implementation. The software incorporates trends in crime data, “hot spots”, weather activity and even circumstantial factors like pay days and music concerts to predict where and when a crime is likely to occur. The new technology is proving promising and may be rolled out into more US cities as a result.
